MRSA and Your Child's Health

MRSA infections have been on the rise, especially a newer, tougher strain known as CA-MRSA, or Community Acquired MRSA.  Most troubling is its appearance in our schools.  MRSA staph is worrisome in that it has attacked seemingly healthy children, and is often mis-diagnosed.

MRSA has been a growing problem in hospitals and nursing homes over the past few years.  You may recall hearing the news about the "super bug" creating all sorts of problems in British hospitals a few years ago.  But most of the recent news has been related to outbreaks in schools.

In most cases an MRSA staph infection is fairly mild, causing a pimple or boil which may be very sore and contain pus. But it can lead to severe illness in victims, which can result in amputations, and even death.

Numerous cases of MRSA infections have been reported in schools across the country this year.  Official statistics are not kept, so there is no way to know how widespread the problem is.

In the month of October, 2007, at least four deaths of children have been reported.  A preschooler in New Hampshire, an 11 year old girl in Mississippi, and 12 and 17 year old boys in New York and Virginia, respectively.
